IntroductionOver the years, the Tadcaster Historical Society has collected an archive of historical documents, maps, copies of registers, catalogues and information about other artifacts relevant to the history of Tadcaster. It is an aim of the Society to digitise this material and to make it available to members through the Internet. The index to this material is freely available, but most items are only accessible to members. Links to public documents have a blue background Some material in the Archive may be copyright. This material in the Archive is provided on the basis that it is used for personal research and not for any commercial purpose. Use in this way should not infringe any copyright in the material, provided it is accompanied by a sufficient acknowledgement of the source. New and amended itemsThe Tadcaster Parish Registers have been added as publically available files as it is thought that these would be of general interest. Some documents are now shown as "digital documents". This means that these documents have been captured as images and then converted into a digital form. The document text is then searchable. |

(digital document) Brief notes on the Tadcaster registers (digital document) 32. Tadcaster Parish Registers: incorporating the Parish Register Transcripts These transcriptions of the Tadcaster Parish Registers were made by C.W.Sellars and are taken from originals which are held in the Borthwick Institute of Historical Research of the University of York. They also incorporate the annual Parish Register Transcripts which were submitted by the incumbent to the Diocese of York: these are also held in the Borthwick Institute. The Registers, which begin in 1570, do not form an unbroken series. The most notable gap is between the first volume of the Registers, which ends in 1624, and the beginning of the second volume which starts in 1653. This suggests that a former second volume (probably from 1624 to 1641) has been lost. After 1653 the entries are relatively continuous. Minor gaps in the series of entries are indicated in the introductions to the separate volumes of the Registers. The first of the Transcripts is dated 1598 but then there is a long gap until 1632 and a second gap between 1641 and 1666. After 1666 there are only a few missing years. Fortunately, there is an almost unbroken series of Transcripts from 1632 to 1641 which goes some way towards filling the gap between the first two volumes of the Registers. Each transcript is accompanied by an index of names. Preface to volume 1 and 2 (digital document).
